Tom Rodriguez, Megan Young banner Phil. Independence Day celebrations in San Diego and Chicago

In celebration of the 121st  Philippine Independence Day, Fil-American Kapuso stars Tom Rodriguez and Megan Young reconnected with their kababayans in the US through vibrant fiestas and back-to-back activities in San Diego and Chicago, respectively.    

Last June 1, Dragon Lady leading man Tom Rodriguez serenaded thousands of Kapuso fans at Kimball Park in San Diego, California during the Mabuhay Festival 2019.The event, sponsored by GMA Pinoy TV and DISH Network, was filled with colourful acts and booths from various Fil-Am organizations.

The Kapuso actor’s energetic and kilig-filled performances added more spectacle to the event. He also sang duet numbers with Dr. Tess Mauricio, ‘America’s Favorite Dermatologist’ and the host of GMA Pinoy TV’s reality show All in the Family, and Rachel Bernardo, one of the finalists fromThe Clash.

Prior to the Mabuhay Festival, Tom got to visit four schools in San Diego whose students are mostly Fil-Am– Mira Mesa High School, Olympian High School, Otay Ranch High School, and Sweetwater High School – to give an inspirational talk about success, heartbreaks, failures, pursuing one’s dreams, never giving up, and the importance of loving your family.

Tom also thanked his kababayans for coming to the event to celebrate Philippine Independence with him. “It was an amazing experience and what makes it different from my other performances here abroad is that it’s literally in my backyard. I grew up very near here and I frequented San Diego but I’ve never performed here [before], so it feels so close to me,” said the Kapuso star.

During his trip, Tom had the chance to reunite with his family in the U.S., making the celebration even more special. “Thank you so much for showing up and for supporting me with my visit here back to my home ground. Hopefully, we can do this again even during my personal visits to my family here in San Diego and hopefully I can also get the chance to see all of you and hang out with some of you.”

The following week, Miss World 2013 Megan Young flew to Chicago, Illinois for the Piyesta Pinoy 2019, the biggest Filipino event in the Midwest that annually celebrates the Philippine Independence Day. It was held last June 8 at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center and was led by the Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF). 

With grace and poise, Megan taught our Kapuso abroad how to walk like a beauty queen. She also performed song numbers with local Fil-Am residents. It was a day full of fun and surprises with local performances and art workshops led by Pinoy artists.

Megan also had a courtesy call at the Philippine Consulate in Chicago where she met  Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin and bonded with the Pinoys in Chicago during her stay.

“I always love traveling and meeting our Kapuso from all over the world. It has been a great pleasure spending this year’s Philippine Independence Day with fellow Pinoys here in Chicago. It feels so good to be Pinoy!” shared Megan who is set to be the lead star in the upcoming Kapuso horror-drama series Hanggang sa Dulo ng Buhay Ko.

StarStruck Season 7: The search is on for the next Ultimate Female and Male Survivors

The stage is set and the cameras are rolling as GMA Network brings forth a brand new season of its original reality-based artista search, StarStruck 7.

The talent search that started it all introduces a tougher, more exciting competition that promises diverse and entertaining challenges, a thrilling judging system, real life drama, and interesting reality-based stories as hopefuls compete to become the next Ultimate Female and Male Survivors.

This season of StarStruck is hosted by Ultimate Star and StarStruck Season 1 Ultimate Female Survivor Jennylyn Mercado and Kapuso Primetime KingDingdong Dantes.

No less than three of the entertainment industry’s most respected personalities – Queen of Creative Collaborations Heart Evangelista, actress par excellenceMs. Cherie Gil, comedy lodi Jose Manalo – will take their seats as this season’s StarStruck Council. As judges, they will be mentoring the finalists and be involved in the story-telling of the program.

Multitalented Kapuso actress Kyline Alcantara joins the program as the StarStruck Insider, the host of Starstruck’s online show, Inside StarStruck.  It premiered last June 10 on the show’s official Youtube channel every Monday to Friday at 6PM.  

Out of thousands of auditionees across the country, 11 boys and 11 girls were chosen through a series of demanding tests dubbed as the ‘StarStruck Experience’. After the gruelling process, these 22 hopefuls will face their final audition on the pilot episode as they compete for a rightful spot in the Final 14.

Kapuso viewers will be able to vote and take part in the judging process as they watch the finalists physically transform on-air through workshops and challenges to help them look and perform better as the reality search unfolds every week.

GMA content distribution team raises the bar for Q1 2019

GMA Network’s content distribution team–a collaboration of GMA International (GMAI), GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), and GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI)—recorded significant milestones in their respective markets for the first quarter of 2019.

GMA International, despite challenging business conditions, generated revenues of P295 million for January to March 2019 period, and business unit net income before taxes settled at P256 million. This translated to 27 percent of the Network’s total net income before tax.

For the first three months of the year, the Network’s international arm inked several partnerships with key content distributors – Cox CommunicationsDVS Maritime,andMavshack – which will further expand GMA’s reach across the globe.

Cox Communications, one of GMAI’s biggest distributors in the US, will launch GMA Pinoy TV on all Cox systems in the US in May 2019. Currently, GMA is only available in five (5) out of the sixteen (16) states where Cox operates. With the forthcoming system-wide launch, GMA will be available in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Cleveland, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

Through GMAI’s deal with DVS Maritime, GMA content will soon be made available to commercial and non-commercial vessels worldwide, and to an estimated 300 Filipino seafarers across the globe.

Meanwhile, in territories where access to GMA content via cable and satellite are a challenge to our fellow Filipinos, a mobile or internet-enabled service will be made available through GMAI’s partnership with Mavshack. These territories include the Middle East, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Caribbean Islands and the Pacific Islands.

GMA Pinoy TV’s YouTube Channel was launched last March in coordination with NMI and the Network’s Program Support Department. This initiative was in line with GMAI’s objectives of creating an online community of Filipinos abroad, improving brand visibility among existing and potential users, especially the young generation, and creating monetary value from content being uploaded.

GMAI also recently signed a deal with Latin Media Corp. (LMC) for the distribution of Spanish-dubbed and subtitled GMA content.   GMA titles such as:  Hanggang Makita Ka Muli (aka Cautiva), Second Chances (aka Una Nueva Oportunidad), Someone to Watch Over Me (aka No Me Olvides), ImpostoraLegally Blind (aka Legalmente Ciega) and Ika-6 na Utos (aka Dulce Venganza), will be made available on Amazon in the US, Latin America and other Spanish language-supported countries.

GMA Worldwide Inc. (GWI), GMA’s syndication arm also inked a separate deal with LMC, which extended the distribution of GMA dramas to Latin America until 2020.

The group also closed a 240 hour volume deal with S&E Syndication in Myanmar which includes the following titles: Inday Will always Love You (aka Happy Together),Pamilya Roces (aka Family Jewels) and Contessa.

GWI also sold the inflight rights of My Korean Jagiya to Philippine Airlines (PAL), which was the group’s first sale to PAL in more than six years.

GMA New Media, Inc., the Network’s digital media and technology arm and its future-proofing agent, also launched pioneering collaborations during the first quarter of 2019.

In terms of producing content that is catered to the online audiences, NMI worked with GMA News and Public Affairs to launch the first online newscast “produced by the young, for the young” called Stand for Truth which was launched on April 15. The production was made possible through a YouTube Innovation grant that GMA received after its participation in a rigorous screening process. Stand for Truth is headlined by Atom Araullo with Richard Heydarian and Joyce Pring.

By looking into actual viewership data and popular themes or genres on YouTube, NMI and GMA Public Affairs also collaborated to produce the first online short film called One Hugot Away. The first part of the video hit 1 million views four days after it was uploaded on GMA Network’s Facebook account last March 25 with the full version similarly getting 1 million views four days after it went live online on April 2. This is only one of the several programs under the GMA ONE line-up which also includes programs such as The Boobay and Tekla Show and TasteMNL.

The Wowowin YouTube channel, currently being managed by NMI, ranked within the top 20 channels in YouTube for the Philippine territory. The channel has been running since November 2018.

Lastly, the GMA Network YouTube channel grew its subscriber base by about 1.5 million since the start of 2019. This means the channel is now only 500,000 subscribers shy of breaching 10-million mark. (30)
